‘The article provides a worrying picture of student debt in the UK’. Qualifi CEO Jason Goodyear says, ‘It doesn’t have to be this way’. Qualifi has available options to stay locally, study locally and earn while you learn. Qualifi qualifications allow access to Top up final year Hons Degree or a Masters, providing a means of students gaining University qualifications at a fraction of the cost of going to Uni for a 3 year (or more) full-time degree programme of study. Furthermore Qualifi provide a comprehensive Recognition of Prior Learning system that can substantially reduce the period of formal study time required in order to gain our L4,5,6,7 or 8 qualifications. After completing the Qualifi L5, students can progress on to the final year of an Honours Degree programme or on to a Qualifi L6 or L7, with progression from the L7 to dissertation only to receive a Masters/MBA. This is a compelling  alternative to the standard 3 year at University and circa £60,000 student debt after graduation.

“In April 2013, Ellie Wood dropped out of her undergraduate degree at the University of Liverpool, just seven months after starting.
In this time, she’d been forced to take on crippling debt just to afford university housing and the other expenses that come with living in a big city. Ultimately, the cost was too much to bear.
Ellie admits that she got swept up in the excitement of going to university and living away from home for the first time. Without any plan as to how to make her money last, she accepted a room in new student halls, even though it was the most expensive option, at £130 a week”.

“In many cases, renting accommodation either from the university or the private sector is simply not an option. Students around the world are choosing to live at home, and so focusing their university applications only on institutions in their hometown.”

“Olivia Firth feels that she didn’t have any options when she was deciding to go to university. Even after restricting her study choices to the North of England, where the cost of living is cheaper, she couldn’t afford to rent privately or take a tiny room on campus in the range of £106 to £150 per week. She lives at home outside York with her parents. To fund her commute to the University of York, as well as other student expenses, she has to work full-time in her summer break and part-time the rest of the year to supplement the student loan she receives”.

“Accommodation prices are deterring young people from furthering their education, and rising prices are yet another blow to cash-strapped students who are already facing at least £60,000 debt.”
